How Does AI Help
Technology Incubation?

Technology incubation is our specialty at TD Tools where we develop products for sand jetting and other areas. Almost every one of our product lines began with a customer need. That customer challenge, or opportunity, required development that included design, prototyping, testing, and a path into the field. That process has not changed. What is changing is how quickly we can move from a question to a functional answer.

Engineers in many fields are already using computational models to improve the effectiveness of tool design. Instead of building first concepts as prototypes, initial model evaluation and testing is performed virtually to identify weaknesses in design. Before the first metal chip lands on the floor, the concept has been evaluated for performance with AI being one of those evaluation tools. Wear characteristics and performance traits are optimized for flow, pressure, abrasive sizes and types and work string specifications. This process does not replace testing, it optimizes the amount of testing time required and reduces time to the field.

Another way that AI can help with technology incubation is knowledge capture. In April we wrote about the "Great Crew Change" which is witnessing a considerable amount of experienced professionals leaving the industry. Passing experience from one generation of technicians and engineers to the next is a considerable challenge. We are utilizing AI to build knowledge bases related to sand jetting, and other areas, to capture this experience and also leverage it for forward looking products and processes.

Customer Training At TD Tools

In addition to knowledge capture, AI can be utilized in many different workflow types: job planning, procedure modeling, material estimates, and providing supporting information that customers might ask before a sand jetting program is even written. It is the same technology incubation path that we have used for UltraSlim 3, MegaPerf, AccuPulse, and FIT — start with a challenge, design a solution, prove out that solution through testing, make modifications as necessary, and prove it in the field, but with the increased efficiency and speed of AI.
