Can I Perforate With Drilling Mud?
"I need to have 13 pound drilling mud in the well that we are going to plug and abandon, can we sand jet perforate the casing with this fluid?" This was a question from one of our service providers to us this year. There are times when our answer to a questions is not "Yes" or "No" but instead, "Let's find out." After testing with the service provider, we found that it is possible to sand jet perforate with 13 pound drilling mud (with sand added) both in yard tests and successfully in the well.

Not only were we able to perforate the 7" casing for the P&A, we were also able to perforate the 9-5/8" and annular cement in between. The MegaPerf tool was conveyed on drill pipe- approximately half of our tools are run on jointed pipe and half on coiled tubing.
