Sand Jet Perforating For Plug & Abandonment
Sand Jet Perforating (SJP) is a natural for plug and abandonment work. There are many unique advantages that SJP can offer for P&A. Eliminating the need for explosives provides multiple advantages: increased safety, reduced regulation and paperwork, and it allows for very shallow perforating and cutting. No explosive requirements not only eliminate the extra layers of safety precautions for handling the tools on the well location, it also removes the transport and storage of the explosives. SJP tools, which contain no hazardous materials, can be shipped, stored and used without government regulation related to hazardous materials and explosives. The elimination of red tape provides faster, more efficient response to perforating needs.

Often during plug and abandonment operations, perforations are required both for communication testing and to place cement. As the perforation hole is eroded in the inner tubing string, a change in pressure in open annulus wells can be seen at the surface. Pumped fluid is delivered directly into the annular space from the jets on the SJP tool creating a pressure differential between the casing strings. Cement can also be pumped directly to the point of perforation through the BHA, allowing for multiple perforating and/or pumping stations in one run. The SJP tool can create multiple sets (stations) of perforations in one run giving it the flexibility to provide perforation holes based on the results of pressure tests in the well.

Sand Jet Perforators can also perforate multiple tubing strings allowing for cementing or pressure testing in more than one annulus and to the reservoir. Common mutli-casing perfs include 7" and 9-5/8" and 9-5/8" and 13-3/8". Perforating production tubing and multiple casings can also be achieved. Severing tubing and casing is also an option using the same tools and adding a power swivel for tubing rotation.
