Why Should I Consider Joint Development Projects?

Most of our new product lines are created by providing a solution for a customer's problem or an opportunity that they see. Often these problems are clearly defined and we work towards designing a solution that meets the need. Occasionally, the opportunity to create a solution overlaps two different technical disciplines. In these instances, a joint development project can be useful to combine technical expertise and create a new product with increased functionality.

One type of joint development project seeks to provide a solution to a problem by combining experience in different technical areas to create a completely new product. TD Tools and Accu-Line Well Services joined forces to create a solution to the problem of Tubing-Retrievable Subsurface Safety Valve's frequent failure to pass pressure tests. The problem was due to the build-up of scale and solids in the valves. TD Tools' expertise in high pressure fluids and tool design combined with Accu-Line's experience with slickline operations and servicing these exact valves created an environment where a new tool could be conceptualized, designed, built and tested in just a few months. This tool is now deployed in both the US and Europe.

Some joint development projects stem from the need to modify or expand the capabilities of a tool that is currently available. "This tool works well for casing sizes up to 7", but I need to cut 9-5/8" casing" is an example of a comment that might start a discussion about a development project. The customer may provide support for the design change, prototype construction, and testing in order to bring a new product to their customers. Modification of existing designs generally proves to have fewer prototype modifications and has a quicker path to market.

Other joint development projects are the result of taking two technologies to create a new technology. Sand jetting and other high pressure fluid applications pair very well with other technologies to enhance functionality or create new capabilities. The resulting combination might include packaging the two tools together as one solution for the customer or a completely new product might be created. Combining proven technologies has the benefit of greater confidence of success due to the history and refinement of each tool over time. This results in delivering a dependable, finished product to market faster.

Joint development projects can be very useful in combining experience, innovation, and technology to produce a new product that is reliable and quickly adopted.
