Using Rigless Sand Jetting To Maximize Capital Efficiency

When discussing projects with our preferred service providers we have found that offering a rigless solution for perforating, cutting, or cleaning is often a differentiator that drives work. Whether running on coiled tubing or on wireline, being able to avoid the rig up/ rig down and daily costs of a rig on the well can make a project feasible when it would not have been possible before. Rigless operations maximize capex efficiency and create opportunities to improve production in existing wells.

Rigless Offshore Coiled Tubing Perforation Using Sand Jetting

by Accu-Line Well Services

The picture above is an example of sand jet perforating offshore to complete a new zone in a well with declining production. Sand Jet Perforating was chosen for its ability to run inside the production tubing and still perforate multiple casings and communicate with the formation. The alternative to perforate the zone was to get a rig for the satellite offshore platform and pull the anchored production tubing to allow for large explosive perforating guns. The added cost of the rig work was a project stopper, which would have meant closure for the well. The rigless sand jetting option was chosen and the new zone was successfully completed with excellent results.

Another example of the advantages of rigless intervention is the ability to jet clean subsurface safety valves using a wireline deployed tool. The AccuPulse™ fluid jetting tool cleans subsurface valves and other similar equipment in the well with a jetting action in 360 degrees with no moving parts. AccuPulse can be deployed on slickline and locks into the nipple profile of TRSV's and other components with nipple profiles. The tubing is then used as the fluid carrier as water and cleaning fluid is pumped to the tool to pressure clean the valve. The AccuPulse™ can clean with 2,500-3,500 psi at flow of only 0.75 bbl/min to 1 bbl/min. After cleaning, the tool is quickly retrieved to the surface.

Cost saving for rigless interventions can also be applied to work on land. The ability to perforate in production tubing through multiple tubing strings and/or casing and also make tubing and casing cuts with a sand jet has twofold savings. The elimination of the rig is the first savings and the elimination of permitting and regulation of explosives is the second. Sand jetting also eliminates scheduling issues due to permitting regulation and increased transportation costs.
