Can I See Sand Jet Perforations In The Well?

Wouldn't we all love to see what is actually happening 15,000' deep in a well? How do we know the hole size of a perforation? How do we know the perf is even there at all? There are a few different ways to confirm the existence and communication ability of all perforations, including sand jet perforations. The most common method of perforation confirmation is injection testing and there are technologies available which provide even more information. Whether using an optical camera, wireline logging tool, or acoustic imaging tool, there are several ways that additional data can be generated for the perforation holes to allow us to "see" what is going on in the well.

Downhole Video of Sand Jet Perforations in 9-5/8" casing inside 13-3/8" Casing

by Titan Oilfield Services

When the conditions are right, a picture (or video) is worth a thousand words. The picture above was captured from a video taken during the plug and abandonment of a well in California, USA. The video clearly shows the perforation hole in the 9-5/8" casing and also shows the undamaged 13-3/8" casing behind. Sand can be seen floating and moving around the annular space. The objective of the video was to document the perforation and communication of fluid into the annular space without compromising the outer casing. Mission accomplished.

Wireline Log Post Sand Jet Perforating

The above example of "seeing" an abrasive jet perforation is taken from a wireline log. The clusters of sand jet perforations are clearly measured by the caliper fingers while previously performed traditional explosive perforations can barely be seen above the sand jetted perfs. Fluctuations in pressure support the caliper log indicating communication between the natural gas reservoir and the formation. The wireline log not only allows for verification of the perforations, it provides depth correlation with pressure and temperature information.

Sand Jet Perforations As Seen With DarkVision High Resolution Acoustic Imaging

DarkVision high resolution acoustic imaging provides detailed analysis of perforation holes even through water, brine, drilling mud, and production fluids. With more than 500,000 perforations imaged, acoustic imaging provides dimensionally accurate data up to 0.01" resolution with a full circumferential scan as seen above. Both size and shape of the perforation (whether created by abrasive jet or traditional explosive perforator) can be accurately evaluated to depths of over 20,000'.

Whatever the method used to see your perforations, we are confident that sand jetting will provide high quality perfs even in demanding conditions. After all, seeing is believing.
